What is the Master Cutler's Challenge?

The Master Cutler's Challenge is one of the largest charity fundraising events in the Sheffield region.

In 2008, Master Cutler Gordon Bridge invited the businesses of the city region to transform a £50 investment into as much fundraising as they could for two local charities. Businesses were given £50 and could use whatever means they wanted to raise money, within legal limits of course. But beyond the law and standard good manners, there was nothing to stop them turning the streets of Sheffield into a giant monopoly game, waxing legs, hitch hiking, or riding a bike for 32 hours. Which is what they did. The charities then were St Luke's and Rotherham Hospices, just as they are this year. This year's challenge is the same as it was in 2008. We'll give you £50 and your challenge as a team is to use your entrepreneurial skills to make as much money as possible for both hospices!

From the Master Cutler

It's with great pleasure that I preside over this year's Master Cutler's Challenge. Not only is it a landmark annual event for many local businesses and a great opportunity for them to unite behind a good cause, but in 2015/16 it supports two charities very dear to us all. The impact of the work done by St Luke's and Rotherham Hospices touches so many. One day, it might even mean something to us all very personally. We all have a stake in the wellbeing of these charities - I can think of no better way to invest in that than to take part in this year's Master Cutler's Challenge.

I'm really determined that together we make this the biggest, most successful challenge to date. For me, the event is about more than raising funds - there's so much to gain from taking part, as individuals, as businesses and as a business community too. Besides, it shows the world what we're all made of here - grit, dedication and good humour!

I hope you'll join us and can't wait to see what you're going to get up to so that we can, together, make our efforts really count for these two remarkable charities. Here's to a wonderful year.

Good luck!

Craig McKay
Sheffield's 337th Master Cutler and CEO, Evenort

The Challenge Charities

This year's challenge raises funds for two charities familiar to many in the region. They help over 2,500 patients each year to reach the end of their lives with dignity, support and as much comfort as possible. They are St Luke's and Rotherham Hospice, and many of you will have been touched by their work somehow.

Funds raised this year will help them to maintain their community palliative care teams so that more people have the choice to die at home. Around 70% of people want to die at home, but only around 20% in our region do. This year, our charities want to change that. Because home is more than the walls that surround us - it is familiarity and comfort; full of the people and memories we cherish. We all know what home means, so let's make the choice to live life to the end, at home, a possibility for all.
